STEMS Takes Action

  • A Resolution is voted on at state primary conventions. Once passed, the resolution may become a platform for candidates. Many resolutions become reality once the candidates win. Our Resolution was turned in on April 4 2006, to the Fort Bend County Election Administration, in preparation for the Texas state primaries on March 7.

On June 10 2006, the Texas Democratic Party PASSED STEMS's resolution at the Texas Democratic Convention. As a result Stem Cell Research support is part of their platfom this election.

Unfortunately, the Texas Republic Party rejected this resolution. The following is the complete resolution turned in to both parties.

    ***

Resolution of Texans Entitlement of Embryonic Stem Cell Research and Funding for it in the State of Texas

Whereas. The State of Texas Constitution recognizes the right to life in Article 1- Bill of Rights, Section 19

Whereas. Texas legislators have made many attempts to criminalizing Embryonic Stem Cell Research. Included is the attempt of criminalizing patients, doctors, researcher, family, friends, clergy and any person that advice or participates in helping a Texan receive therapeutic embryonic stem cell treatment. Even criminalizing of a person that should travel to another state or country for this medical treatment.

Whereas. The opponents of this medical research exploit religion by manipulating citizens for their personal and or political advantage.

Whereas. The misconception that a single cell ( an oocyte ) is a child, person or human being. Thier manipulation of religion, by stating that using these cells for research is sacrilegious.

Whereas. The misleading concept that adult stem cells are equal to or better than the medical expectations for embryonic stem cells. The concept, that it is better to sustain these cells in a frozen state or dispose of them with bio hazard waste is incomprehensible.

Whereas. Texans suffer with prolonged diseases, painful treatments, mental, physical, and financial devastation.

Whereas. Texans with Chronic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes are among the most costly to the families and the state of Texas.

Whereas. The state of Texas lags behind other states that are investing in embryonic stem cell research and in their state’s financial future.

Whereas. Texas will loss many fine doctors, specialist, and scientist to states that are investing in this medical science.

Resolution. The State of Texas Constitution, Article 1 Bill of Rights, Section 19- Deprivation of Life, Liberty, Etc.: Due Course Of Law No citizen of this State shall be deprived of life, liberty, property, or immunities, or in any manner disfranchised, except by the due course of the law of the land.

It is clear that the State of Texas gives its citizens the right to life. Preventing embryonic stem cell research is an obstruction of this right. Embryonic stem cell research promises and has proven amazing medical progress for chronic diseases. Simply put, the right of life in our constitution and in light that this medical science that will someday cure and save lives, the State of Texas will be enforcing its constitutional to right to life.

Resolution. Criminalizing the ill, their loved ones, the doctors, researchers, friends, pastors or any one that can help the chronically ill is inhumane. Strong laws should be passed in the case that advice is not correctly given to save a person’s life. That all measures, should be available to the chronically ill and their family. That embryonic stem cell research and/or therapy is an option in the State of Texas and should not criminalize the ill and empathizers for traveling to another state or county for the sake of human health.

Resolution. Legal consequences to individuals whom intentionally and knowingly misleads a person, group or institution on medical treatments. This would be a malicious and willful act that could and would afflict additional pain and suffering, including the right to a chance of a cure and could endangering life..

Resolution. Public and state literature, public and state sponsored forums and media education of basic biology. A child, person, or human cannot be one with out the protection, nourishment, and biological needs of a woman’s womb. One cell does not make a human being. A dish can not sustain life. Religions have difference concepts of life. No two religions agree completely. But it is common sense, to even the religious right that a human has characteristics that define it’s life. An oocyte has no blood, heartbeat, brainwaves, spine, eyes, etc. Therefore it is a complete component of billions of cells that make a child, person, or human being.

Resolution. Adult stem cells have their advantages but in no way comes close to the promise of cures that embryonic stem cell research does. It has been proven in lab animals, that cures are more than likely to occur through embryonic stem cell therapy. Another misconception is that these cell can be kept frozen perpetually without damage. Fact is, that cells die after a certain amount of time frozen. Rather than use these cells for research, many would prefer to have them destroyed. This concept has no logic of reasoning. A Pro-Lifer that rather see destruction of these cells, than to save a human life, is a contradiction in terms. There must be state and public education to correct these immoral philosophies. Emphasis must be placed on the difference between the two different stem cell researches. Public and private media must be a partner in this educational effort. Health organizations, associations and foundations must work in conjunction with the Texas Health Department to correct public misunderstanding of stem cell research. Doctors should have more public access and courses to keep them updated to the advances of embryonic stem cell research. Doctors should be obligated to educate the patients.

Resolution. As we wait and many are dying, Texans are being asked to continue hoping and continue their suffering. The chronically ill must endure pain and the prospect of a short life. They also must struggle through the torment of losing everything they own due to financial distress and leave their families in destitute. This could be prevented. Their only hope is embryonic stem cell research, that could someday give them an immediate cure. Unlike adult stem cell therapy, with embryonic stem cell therapy there is even the protection of no rejection of the body after transfusion. Therefore, this patient would not need to take anti-rejection drugs for the rest of his or her life. They would never have that take this dangerous medication. THE RIGHT TO LIFE.

Resolution: The promise of Cures through embryonic stem cell is inclusive. Every disease from Heart diseases to MS , Sickle Cell to Diabetes, Cancers to Blindness is curable. The promise of this medical science is of enormous value to every Texan, American and to the world. Texas spends about $12,000,000.00 a year and this amount is growing, on surveillance, chronic disease prevention and control, and on modifying risks factors. This amount does not include medical emergency expenses, pharmaceutical, hospital stays, hospice stays, medical attendants, doctors, and other medical expenses. We taxpayers pay willingly for the ill those that cannot afford medical insurance. Billions of tax dollars yearly are used to pay these bills. With so much less, the State of Texas could resolve this problem and invest in the research that could someday eliminate the cost of health care all together.

Resolution. Many states have taken the initiative to invest in the future of the greatest medical discovery ever. California, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Ohio and more are setting the grounds for future clinical research of embryonic stem cell research. California for example, took measures of authorizing the issuance of bonds in the amount of $3 billion beginning in 2005 not to exceed sale of $350 million per year. This is the famous Proposition 71. Many states have followed. Texas should not be left behind. Texas could use bonds and grants to investment on this project. Many have suggested permitting casinos in our state , these moneys would also contribute to the fund. Taxes on corporations and large business in our state would also we a tremendous source of revenue toward Texas Stem Cell Research.

Resolution. Our state will be losing many great scientist, researchers and doctors to states that have opened their doors to discovery. Many lab technicians will also find their homes close to research centers. States that have already invested in research for embryonic stem cell research will be the golden gate of medical interest. These states will not only enjoy the privilege of being in the mist of the greatest medical discovery ever but they will benefit in the comfort of having the finest doctors in the world living and working in their state. In addition, they will have the financial advantage over many states that are not participating. These states will also have own tribute and deserved honors through out the world, once embryonic stem cell research is proven in humans. Texas must take step immediately and take the measures recommended here, to be in the same circumstance as these states. We must take the lead or loss.
